Dave Plays Ball (Part Deux)
May 17th, 2007 by Vlad
Extended post that I’m keeping off Vladville to keep it clean. (and keep JimmyJoeBob’s heart pressure under control)
This, in case you’re wondering, is how you make it big. No, it’s not by buying used garbage off eBay, tying up freeware and thinking you’ve got ExchangeDefender. What’s even funnier is that some people have such a tiny window through which they view the world that they can’t figure how it is we make money at all. Let me blow your mind now: I told Dave I’d comp this a week before he even told me what it was about. He needed a server for two weeks for a project and I let it slide even though it costs us money for power, backup, setup and licensing.
“That’s just ridiculous”, JimmyJoeBob says, “giving things away for free is wrong. At least cover your costs. Or offer a discount. Treat it like a business, not a charity you commie bastards. I can’t figure out how you make money – I even pulled together my collection of high school kids together and we collectively couldn’t figure it out!!!!”
Own Web Now’s partner program has come under a lot of fire in the public, to the point that I won’t even talk about it on Yahoo groups anymore. People on there can’t figure out Shockey Monkey, at-cost backup program, freebie hosting and ExchangeDefender accounts, etc possibly make sense? Well, read that article. Then take a look again at this post. Still don’t get it? Read them both again. If you still can’t figure out how the big boys do things then you’ll never get to this level.
Get over thinking that you need to be compensated for everything you do. You need to support the people, partners and the business/public community in order to make it big. Otherwise you’re just a whore, and we all know what happens to that revenue stream when your looks start to go….

And always remember who your friends are — when someone does you a favor, you remember them and think of them.
We not only sell ExchangeDefender, but we sell the Virtual SBS boxes, and why? Because we know they’re good and we know we’ll get service.
Sometimes you have to give a little to get a lot. Give in the spirit of giving, and you’ll get even more in return.
